Labyrinthine - Jane Dickson with Lucy Duncombe and Anneke Kampman
Lucy Duncombe and Anneke Kampman are embedded in a process of developing a collaborative singing practice that seeks to redeploy the unusual facets of the human voice within their work; its edges, physicality, timbre and an inside-outside sound. They work with composition, improvisation and performance, exploring how the sound of the voice interrupts and is interrupted by language and text – by drawing attention to the acoustics of language and the degradation of meaning by reducing the verbal to mere sound. As friends, they are always developing new ways to sing together; extending the voice with a computer so that it goes on forever, making ten words become one, pretending to sing like a fax machine and singing at tunnels.
In Labyrinthine, first performed at La Monnaie | De Munt (National Opera of Belgium) in October 2015, they jump while singing and break up single melodic lines into multiple voicings through hockets and patterns, playing with shifting identities and the physicality of virtuosity.
